Rookies to watch (with Starting Jobs  in 2007)

Dustin Pedroia, Boston Red Sox Projected Starting Second Baseman

Position: Shortstop | Bats: Right | DOB: 8/17/1983

YEAR   LVL    AB    AVG    OBP    SLG   HR  XBH   BB   SO

2004     A    50   .400   .474   .560    1    6    6    3

         A   107   .336   .417   .523    2   13   13    4

2005    AA   256   .324   .409   .508    8   29   34   26

       AAA   204   .255   .356   .382    5   15   24   17

2006   AAA   423   .305   .384   .426    5   38   48   27

A first-team All-American at Arizona State University and one of five finalists for the Golden Spikes Award that Jered Weaver won, Dustin Pedroia was selected by the Red Sox in the second round of the 2004 draft. He hit .357 between two levels of Single-A in his pro debut and then made the jump to Double-A in 2005, hitting .324/.409/.508 with eight homers and 29 total extra-base hits in 66 games.  His numbers after a promotion to Triple-A were disappointing, but it's worth noting that they were accumulated while Pedroia played through a nagging wrist injury.

In 159 total minor-league games coming into 2006, Pedroia hit .310/.398/.473 with 16 homers, 63 total extra-base hits, and 77 walks.  He began this year back at Triple-A and hit .305/.384/.426 with five homers and 38 total extra-base hits in 111 games before being called up by the Red Sox last week.  With Alex Gonzalez on the disabled list and Mark Loretta also hurting, Pedroia split time between shortstop and second base thus far.  Interestingly, perhaps his best comparable among all big leaguers is Loretta, both offensively and defensively.

Boston’s decision to go with Pedroia over Hanley Ramirez as its shortstop of the future looks like a mistake given Ramirez’s impressive rookie season in Florida, but Pedroia remains a solid prospect and will step into the lineup for Loretta in 2007.  Pedroia’s skills aren’t well suited for fantasy stats—his value comes largely from walks, defense, and singles, and he doesn’t have much speed—but he’ll get on base at a good clip, hit 10-12 homers, and smack plenty of doubles. Long-Term Fantasy Grade: B

Chris Iannetta, Colorado Rockies  Projected Starting Catcher

Position: Catcher | Bats: Right | DOB: 4/8/1983

YEAR   LVL    AB    AVG    OBP    SLG   HR  XBH   BB   SO

2004     A   121   .314   .454   .496    5   11   27   29

2005     A   261   .276   .381   .490   11   31   45   61

        AA    60   .233   .329   .417    2    6    8   15

2006    AA   156   .321   .418   .622   11   23   24   26

       AAA   151   .351   .447   .510    3   16   24   29

After hitting .336/.438/.598 with 15 homers and 71 RBIs during his final season at the University of North Carolina, the Rockies grabbed Chris Iannetta in the fourth round of the 2004 draft.  He hit .314/.454/.496 with five homers and 11 total extra-base hits in 36 games at Single-A after signing and then batted .276/.381/.490 with 11 homers and 31 total extra-base hits in 74 games at Single-A to begin 2005.  That earned Iannetta a late-season call-up to Double-A, but he struggled there, hitting just .233/.329/.417 with two homers and six total extra-base hits in 19 games.

Iannetta started 2006 back at Double-A and absolutely dominated the Texas League, hitting .321/.418/.622 with 11 homers and 23 total extra-base hits in 44 games.  The Rockies quickly moved him up to Triple-A and he picked up right where he left off, hitting .351/.447/.510 with three homers and 16 total extra-base hits in 47 games before he was surprisingly called up last September.  It’s unclear how much time Iannetta will see as Yorvit Torrealba is still expected to see playing time.

Iannetta doesn’t project as a huge power hitter in the majors, but should be good for 15-20 homers annually.  His biggest strength has been posting great batting averages along with outstanding plate discipline and top notch strike-zone control.  In other words, he gets on base at a great clip while keeping his strikeouts relatively low.  The “catcher of the future” tag hasn’t worked out particularly well for former Rockies prospects Ben Petrick and J.D. Closser, but Iannetta could be a major fantasy star if his development doesn’t stall.  He’s one of the most underrated prospects around.

 Long-Term Fantasy Grade: B

Delmon Young | Tampa Bay Devil Rays Projected Starting Outfielder

Just two seasons after being the first overall pick in the 2003 draft, Delmon Young has become the consensus best prospect in all of baseball.  After hitting .322/.388/.538 with 25 homers and 56 total extra-base hits in 131 games at Single-A in 2004, Young moved up to the high minors last season and batted .315/.354/.527 with 26 homers and 59 total extra-base hits in 136 games between Double-A and Triple-A.  Those numbers are impressive enough on their own, but what makes them particularly outstanding is that Young played the entire 2005 season at the age of 19.

The sky is essentially the limit when it comes to Young’s offensive potential.  He needs to work on drawing walks and could cut down on his strikeouts, but those are things that tend to improve naturally at his age.  Young has huge power potential, has shown the ability to post big batting averages wherever he’s gone, and has surprisingly good speed.  In addition to hitting .317/.370/.531 with 51 homers and 214 RBIs in 267 pro games in 2005, Young has stolen 53 bases at 75-percent clip.   He has legitimate Hall of Fame ability.

Delmon Young made headlines this season for just about everything but his actual performance.  He received a 50-game suspension for throwing his bat at an umpire and angered the Devil Rays with negative comments in a USA Today article.  Of course, when it comes to his fantasy value, the important thing is that Dmitri’s little brother hit .316/.341/.474 with eight homers, 34 total extra-base hits, and 22 steals in 86 games at Triple-A.  Arguably baseball’s top prospect.

Long-Term Fantasy Grade: A+

Chris Young, Arizona Diamondbacks  Projected Starting Centerfielder

Position: Outfield | Bats: Right | DOB: 9/5/1983

YEAR   LVL    AB    AVG    OBP    SLG   HR  XBH   BB   SO

2004     A   465   .262   .365   .505   24   60   66  145

2005    AA   466   .277   .377   .545   26   70   70  129

2006   AAA   402   .276   .363   .532   21   57   52   71

Taken by the White Sox in the 16th round of the 2001 draft, Chris Young was traded to the Diamondbacks in the offseason deal for Javier Vazquez after Chicago chose Brian Anderson as its center fielder of the future.  As far as top prospects go, Young tends to get overlooked because his batting average leaves a lot to be desired.  He came into 2006 with a career batting average of .264 in 390 pro games and hit just .276 at hitter-friendly Triple-A Tucson, but a look beyond batting average shows a player who does just about everything else extremely well.

Young is a well-regarded defensive center fielder, draws tons of walks for someone so young, has outstanding power, and was in the midst of his fourth straight 20-steal season when Arizona called him up in September.  He’s also made great strides to improve his ability to make contract, going from striking out a combined 274 times between 2004 and 2005 (29 percent) to striking out 71 times in 402 at-bats (17 percent) in 2006.  In other words, if you’re willing to accept a .250 or .260 batting average, Young is perhaps the most underrated elite prospect in baseball.

Young projects as an annual 20-20 threat whose overall numbers should get a nice boost from the ballpark in Arizona.

 Long-Term Fantasy Grade: A

Matt Garza, Minnesota Twins Projected Starting Pitcher

Position: Starter | Throws: Right | DOB: 11/11/1983

YEAR   LVL    G   GS      IP    ERA     H   HR    SO   BB

2005     R    4    4    19.2   3.66    14    3    25    6

         A   10   10    56.0   3.54    53    5    64   15

2006     A    8    8    44.1   1.42    27    3    53   11

        AA    5    5    34.0   1.85    20    1    33    7

       AAA   10   10    57.1   2.51    40    2    68   14

A first-round pick out of Fresno State University last June, Matt Garza pitched well between rookie-ball and low Single-A after signing, and has emerged as one of baseball’s truly elite prospects in his second full season.  Garza began this year at Single-A, moved up to Double-A after just eight starts, and was promoted to Triple-A a month later.  He went 14-4 between the three levels, combining to post the following absolutely ridiculous numbers:  135.2 innings, 1.99 ERA, 154 strikeouts, 32 walks, .179 opponent’s batting average.

Allowing just 87 hits in 135.2 innings is a huge part of what makes Garza a great prospect, and of particular note is that he served up only six homers. Even more so than win-loss records or ERAs, the three things to focus on when it comes to pitching prospects are strikeouts, walks, and homers. Garza is about as good as it gets in all three of those areas, which is why he has the potential to give the Twins three “No. 1 starters” along with Johan Santana and Francisco Liriano.

Garza throws extremely hard, but appeared overly reliant on his fastball against Toronto.  With that said, he has the stuff to be successful relatively soon and over the long haul there are few young pitchers with more upside.  Don’t let his poor start in the majors scare you off; he’s for real.

Long-Term Fantasy Grade: A

Jason Hirsh, Colorado Rockies Projected Starting Pitcher

Position: Starter | Throws: Right | DOB: 2/20/1982

YEAR   LVL    G   GS      IP    ERA     H   HR    SO   BB

2004     A   26   23   130.1   4.01   128    8    96   57

2005    AA   29   29   172.1   2.87   137   12   165   42

2006   AAA   23   23   137.1   2.10    94    5   118   51

A second-round pick out of Division III Cal-Lutheran University in 2003, Jason Hirsh began his pro career as a relative soft-tosser, especially given his intimidating 6-foot-8 frame.  After posting a 4.01 ERA and just 96 strikeouts in 130.1 innings at Single-A in 2004, he didn’t look like a particularly promising pitcher.  However, since then he’s added a significant amount of velocity to his fastball and in doing so has blossomed into one of the best, most underrated pitching prospects around.

Hirsh went 13-8 with a 2.87 ERA and 165-to-42 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 172.1 innings at Double-A in 2005 and began 2006 by going 13-2 with a 2.13 ERA and 118-to-51 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 137.1 innings at Triple-A.  The strikeout rate dropped quite a bit and the strikeout-to-walk ratio was barely above 2-to-1, but it’s tough to argue with the results.

Hirsh projects as a solid No. 3 starter who could develop into a top-of-the-rotation guy by boosting his strikeout rate a bit more.  His minor-league numbers suggest he should be able to keep the ball in the ballpark despite his move to Colorado this off-season.  Hirsh is a lot better bet than any number of better-known pitching prospects and should get a chance as a full-time member of Colorado’s rotation coming out of spring training.
