AL Player Spotlight - May 4, 2008

Thomas Massimo

Joe Saunders: Fantasy owners of Saunders are enjoying some good numbers, 5-0 record and a 2.55 ERA. Just be aware, that his skills are just average; 4.6 K/9, 2.1 BB/9, and a 50% GB%, and he is enjoying some good fortune, 79% strand rate and a .238 BHIP%.

Jamey Carroll: For some reason the Indians have seen it fit to give Carroll 49 plate appearances this year. Predictably he has not done much with the playing time, 0/3/.216. Carroll does not offer much power and don’t be fooled by the 3 for 3 in steals. Back in 2006 he was caught an unbelievable 12 times in 22 attempts.

Kenji Johjima: It has been a brutal start to the season for Johjima, 0/5/.190 in 84 AB. After putting up decent power numbers over the last couple of seasons, 2006/2007 HR’s of 18/14 and doubles of 25/29, Johjima is not hitting the ball hard, just 3 extra-base hits. The sample size is small and he still making excellent contact, 95% Ct%, so for now it is prudent to give him the benefit of the doubt, just be aware that he turns 32 next month and this could represent some skills erosion.

Ian Kinsler: After showing good power growth over the last couple of seasons, 2006/2007 HR’s of 14/20, Kinsler has been a disappointment in the power department, 2 home runs in 118 AB. What makes it even more troubling is that he is maintaining his fly ball rate, 2006/2007/2008 FB%’s of 44%/45%/45%, while playing in a home park known for power. He is at an age, he turns 26 in June, where his power should growing, not regressing.

CJ Wilson: Despite converting 7 of 8 saves chances, Wilson has one of the worst peripherals, 3.5 K/9 and a 3.5 BB/9, of any closer. He has always had some trouble with the free passes, 2006/2007 BB/9’s of 3.7/4.4, but his 2007 K/9 of 8.3 and GB% of 49% is a good combination to close in Ameriquest Field. Unless he starts striking out some more batter, look for some blown saves in the near future.
