AL Player Report - August 14, 2008

Thomas Massimo

Anthony Reyes: Supposedly there were such major philosophical differences on the art of pitching between Reyes and former pitching coach Dave Duncan that a change of scenery for Reyes was absolutely needed. At first glance, it looks like it is working, 3 ER in 12.1 innings since joining the Indians, but Reyes will not be able to get away with such a low amount of K’s, just 4 in those 12.1 innings, because he is basically a fly ball pitcher, 2005/2006/2007 FB%’s of 53%/46%/44%. Using Reyes in fantasy leagues is a risky proposition.

Cliff Pennington: The A’s called up 2005 first round draft pick Cliff Pennington from Triple-A, where he was not exactly setting the league on fire, 2/16/.297 in 236 AB. On the positive side, he was showing an outstanding approach at the plate, 86% Ct% and a 1.59 BB/K, and speed, 20 steals in 21 attempts in Double-A and 11 steals in 16 attempts in Triple-A this year. He could see some time in a mediocre A’s infield and could help in speed and batting average categories, just don’t expect any power out of him.

Chris Getz: The White Sox called up Chris Getz from Triple-A, where he was having a fine season, 11/51/.306 with 24 doubles and 11 steals in 396 AB. With a respectable approach at the plate, 87% Ct% and a .74 BB/K, if he sees some playing time, he could be a decent contributor in AL-only leagues.

Gio Gonzalez: Gonzalez, a top pitching prospect, has looked decent in his first two starts with the A’s, 4.09 ERA and 9 K’s in 11 innings, but is encountering the same control issues, 6 walks, that was contributing to a 4.24 ERA in 123 Triple-A innings, 4.5 BB/9. His future is bright, but until he shows improvement with his control, there will be some bumps in the road.

Justin Ruggiano: The injury-ravaged Rays recalled Ruggiano from Triple-A, where he was having a nice season, 11/51/.315 with 20 steals in 257 AB. However, he was making poor contact, 70% Ct, which figures to get worse with extended play against better pitchers in the major leagues. In his two trials with the Rays this year, he has not shown much power, 3 extra-base hits in 37 PA, which combined with the poor contact skills makes him a poor choice in any fantasy format.
