NL Player Report - August 6, 2008

Thomas Massimo

Yoslan Herrera: After posting a 9.82 ERA in five starts, the Pirates mercifully sent Herrera back to the minors. Considering that he was not exactly blowing Double-A hitters away; 5.2 K/9 and a 3.1 BB/9, his lack of success in the big leagues should have come as no surprise. At the age of 27, he is more of a suspect than a prospect.

Tom Gorzelanny: It is possible that a trip to the minors; 7.2 K/9 and a 1.7 BB/9 in 16.1 innings has straightened Gorzelanny out; 5.4 K/9, 6.4 BB/9, and a 6.57 ERA with the Pirates this year prior to going to Triple-A. When the Pirates recall him, keep on eye on the walk totals in his first couple of starts before activating him.

Tom Glavine: Glavine allowed 1 ER in 4 innings in a rehab start for the Braves’ Single-A team. He is scheduled for one more start and then should be back in the Braves’ rotation. We will find out if it was the elbow or age that caused Glavine’s control problems, 5.0 BB/9 in 59.1 innings.

Corey Patterson: It has been a rough season for Patterson, 7/17/.194 in 217 AB. A ridiculous .148 BHIP% can take part of the blame, but Patterson is not helping himself with a miniscule 3.6% BB%. On the positive side, Patterson is holding onto the big gains that he made in his contact skills last season, 2005/2006/2007/2008 Ct%’s of 74%/80%/86%/87%. He will not provide much power, but he is fast, 37 steals last season, and if he sees some playing time, there is big batting average upside if his BHIP% begins to normalize.

Josh Bard: Bard returned to action on July 25th after missing more than 2 months with a sprained ankle. He has a nice approach at the plate; 2006/2007/2008 BB%’s of 11%/11%/9% and Ct’s of 83%/85%/87%, and with a depressed .188 BHIP%, he could have some upside from his current .214 batting average, but without any power, 1 home in 145 AB, or speed, don’t expect anything else from him.
