AL Player Spotlight - June 10, 2010

Paul Sauberer

CJ Wilson- TEX- Cold- I was in Sun Life Stadium Tuesday night and got to see Wilson up close and personal. He managed to qualify for quality start, allowing 2 runs on 2 hits over 6IP while striking out 6. However, he was extremely lucky to do so. His control was absolutely horrible. Wilson had close to an equal number of balls and strikes over the course of the night and ended up throwing 51 balls in 111 pitches and walked 6 batters. A BHIP of .254 is the only thing between Wilson and disaster. Regression to the mean will do nasty things to his numbers.

Carlos Pena- TB- Cold- Over his last 4 games, Pena is 3-for-16 with 1 walk and 7 Ks. With a .207 BABIP, luck has killed Pena’s average, which is at .196. He does seem to make some of his own luck, as he hits better when his Batting EYE rises. The power is obviously still there and if he cuts down on the strikeouts and takes more walks, that will help speed the process of resurrecting his batting average.

Jon Rauch- MIN- Hot- Rauch has been streaky this season. His last two appearances have seen him retire all 6 batters he has faced. Before that, he had 8 consecutive appearances where he allowed at least one hit. Despite the ups and downs, Rauch seems to be embedded in the Minnesota closer role, so maintains significant value.

Alberto Callaspo- KC- Cold- Callaspo has had a rough June, hitting just .176 with no homers. This is a buy low opportunity as Callaspo has been experiencing horrendous luck. His BHIPx is down to .209. Regression to the mean will cure what ails Callaspo and if you can get him cheap now from someone who is giving up on him, that would be a good thing to do.

David Aardsma- SEA- Cold- Aardsma picked up his 14th save of the season last night, but still hasn’t recorded a 1-2-3 inning since May 26th. Since then he has allowed 9 hits and 3 walks in 5 IP over 7 appearances. At some point his hold on the closer role has to get shaky if this keeps up.
