For Fantasy Baseball managers, there are 3 essential components on draft day that are absolutely necessary to compete in an advanced league, national contest, and/or dominate a newly formed league:

1. Projections/Rankings which come from a reputable source: a group with a complete understanding of statistical precedence, its forecasting impact, and the ability to evaluate and access player talent. Most importantly, projections that cover more than 5 categories. Projections that are updated daily throughout the spring....roles change constantly during spring training and if your source falls behind, so will your chances on draft day.

Fantistics had the most accurate Player Projections in 2004  among the major fantasy forecasting services. For the first time, an independent group/organization compared player projections from subscription services, coupling the player projections forecasts on a level playing field. We’re certainly very proud of the outcome,  but humbly not surprised as our internal comparisons have been favorable since our inception. Other services included in this study were Baseball HQ, The Sporting News, and Baseball Notebook.  See this link for details.

2. A Draft Strategy that works: There are "lots of folks with lots of opinions", and there are "first place finishers" and there are "last place finishers"....this is not to say there is only one strategy that works, but when you come across one that works...it's a good idea to stick with it.

Fantistics Draft Strategy (VAM)

  • Uses a proven mathematical model that ranks players based on their relative value: click here for details of the VAM drafting model.

  • Assigns a forecasting probability to each position, which assures that you are favoring players on draft day that offer more predictability.

3. A valuation model that considers your league characteristics, and most importantly your league scoring! Almost everyone posts rankings according to a basic 5x5 category scoring (AVG, HR, R, RBI, SB - W, S, ERA, WHIP, K), but that doesn't fit everyone, how about those that play in a fantasy point leagues (like many of the national contests)...even in the typical 5x5 scoring league, valuations and rankings can be WILDLY different depending on how many teams are in your league, how many positions are drafted, NL/AL or single leagues, any keeper players, dollars allowed, etc...finally a program that will allow you to make changes to the player projections.
