Ryan O'Hearn- OF- BAL- Hot- O'Hearn picked up his second straight multi-hit game by going 2-for-3 with a walk and 2 RBI last night. For the season he is slashing .274/.352/.452 with 12 homers in 364 PAs. O'Hearn has showed excellent plate discipline, with a 25.2% chase rate and 6.9% SwStr% resulting in a 10.4% BB% and 12.9% K%. He has been underperforming his metrics, with an xBA of .283 and xSLG of .495. O'Hearn's 90.5 EV and 42.7% HardHit% are close to his career marks and have not suffered as he approaches career highs in playing time.
Mitch Spence- P- OAK- Rookie- Over the course of his last 4 starts, Spence has a quality start and 3 others that were close. He has allowed a total of 7 ERs in 22.2 IP across those starts, allowing 21 hits, walking 8, and striking out 14. Spence has to be considered a successful Rule V pick by the A's. He owns a 4.33 ERA, 4.20 FIP, 4.11 xFIP, 7.30 K/9, and 2.63 BB/9 in 106 IP. He has owned a rotation spot since mid-May and has potential to continue to develop as a low risk late round fantasy pick in 2025.
Cody Bellinger- OF- CHC- Hot- Bellinger has been limited to DH since coming off the IL on July 30. He had suffered a finger fracture. Since then Bellinger has put the "Hitter" in "Designated Hitter." Last night he went 3-for-4 with a walk, homer, 2 runs, and 2 RBI. Bellinger's slash line of .279/.335/.434 with 12 homers in 382 PAs is below his 2023 results of a .307/.356/.525 slash line with 26 homers in 556 PAs. Last year's numbers were an overperformance and so are this year's. Bellinger had a .230 xBA and .369 xSLG entering last night. Right now it looks like his output last year was an outlier for what can be expected now.
Michael Massey- 2B- KC- Hot- Massey went 3-for-4 with a sac fly, 2 RBI and a run last night. It was the 7th time he has hit safely in his last 8 games. The only hitless game was when Massey failed to get a pinch hit. He is slashing .265/.290/.480 with 10 homers in only 219 PAs. While Massey only has a K% of 15.1%, it's not from solid plate discipline. He has a 40.3% chase rate, 7.8% SwStr%, and 85.2% Contact%. Massey's BB% is only 3.2% so he swings a lot but makes contact. His xSLG is only .435 and his EV is at 88.5% with a 35.3% HardHit%. His 14.1% HR/FB rate coming into last night probably has a helping of good luck baked in. Massey's profile is settling into a potential 15 or so homers with a low average and OBP.
Austin Wells- C- NYY- Hot- Wells has been as hot in August as he was in July. In 5 games this month he is slashing .400/.478/.450. Wells has only 1 extra base hit in his 8 and has a .417 BABIP in August. His overall slash line for the season is .249/.346/.413 and he has 8 homers in 267 PAs with a BABIP of .282. Wells has underperformed his metrics as his xBA is .265 and xSLG is .444. These early games of August may be some regression setting in and there is still room for positive regression.
