Clarke Schmidt- P- NYY- Hot- Schmidt came off the Il and tossed 4.2 shutout IP against the Cubs. He threw 75 pitches, 44 of them strikes. Schmidt gave up 4 hits, walked 1, and struck out 2. He matched his longest rehab stint so is still building stamina. For the season Schmidt has a 2.34 ERA, 3.50 FIP, and 3.80 xFIP with a 9.51 K/9 and 2.89 BB/9.
Devin Williams- RP- MIL- Great Player- Last night Williams showed why he is an elite closer. He struck out the side on 11 pitches, 9 of them strikes. Despite not making his MLB debut until July 28 Williams has saved 9 games and struck out 27 in 14.2 IP. He is showing no effects of the stress fractures that delayed his season and is going to be a top flight reliever in 2025.
Ryan Pepiot- P- TB- Hot- Pepiot picked up the win yesterday by allowing 1 run on 6 hits and 2 walks while striking out 4 in 5.1 IP against the Orioles. In his last 10 starts he has allowed 14 ERs in 50 IP for an ERA of 2.52. Pepiot also allowed 5 unearned runs in that span, so he had a 4.08 FIP and 4.65 xFIP in the 9 games before last night. For the season he has had some good fortune, with a 3.66 ERA, 4.18 FIP and 4.17 xFIP. Pepiot has averaged better than a strikeout per IP, with a 9.40 K/9. He has showed progress in his first season as a regular member of a rotation.
Xavier Edwards- SS- MIA- Hot- Edwards went 2-for-5 with 2 steals last night. He is slashing .328/.402/.405 with 24 steals in 225 PAs across 52 games. Edwards has regained his plate discipline, with a BB% of 11.6% and K% of 16.4%.His average has been helped by a .394 BABIP, but with his speed and ability to draw a walk he will maintain an OBP that will give him chances to steal.
Tyler Stephenson- C- CIN- Hot- Stephenson went 1-for-2 last night but also got on base via walk and HBP. He has hit safely in 5 of his last 6 games and collected multiple hits in 2 of those games. Stephenson is slashing .264/.342/.466 with 18 homers in 447 PAs this season. His chase rate of 23.3% and SwStr% of 8.4% is an improvement in plate discipline for him. Stephenson's EV of 90.2 and increase in FB% to 33.8% has resulted in a power surge. His performance has given him value at C.
