Nathan Eovaldi- P- TEX- Cold- Eovaldi came off the IL and did not have a strong start. He allowed 3 runs on 3 hits and 2 walks while striking out 2 in 3 IP. Eovaldi did throw 31 of his 45 pitches for strikes. He didn't make any rehab starts and was out for exactly a month. Eovaldi's FIP for the game was 3.74 so he did have some bad luck. There was likely a bit of rust involved in the results of this outing.
Will Warren- P- NYY- Hot- Warren struck out 7 in 5 IP last night. It was the 9th time in his last 11 starts that he recorded at least 6 Ks. For the season, Warren has a K/9 of 11.54. Although his BB/9 is 3.92 he can experience bouts of wildness. Last night Warren walked 4 and needed 100 pitches to get through his 5 IP, and 40 of them were balls. The strikeouts have boosted Warren's value and also helped reduce his runs allowed. He has only allowed 5 runs in 23 IP across his last 4 starts. His opponents have not been the most solid of offenses (KC, LAA, BAL, and ATH) so it's not time to depend on him to reproduce those results consistently.
Spencer Steer- OF- CIN- Hot- Steer extended his hot streak in fine fashion. In his first game at Great American Ballpark Steer launched 3 homers. He has a 6-game hitting streak working and has multiple hits in 6 of his last 9 games. There is some regression to the mean at work here. Before this streak, Steer had a .287 BABIP. It is now up to .311. He is slashing .250/.302/.402 with 9 homers. With an 87.0 EV and 31.7% HardHIt% for the year, Steer doesn't show the type of power that makes this output more than an anomaly.
Sonny Gray- P- STL- Hot- Gray tossed a Maddux last night. He pitched a complete game shutout, using only 89 pitches (66 of them strikes.) He was a 5th inning Nolan Jones single away from a perfect game and struck out 11. Gray had looked human in his previous 2 starts. He gave up 1 run but only lasted 5 IP in his last start and was tagged for 6 runs on 8 hits and a walk in the appearance before that. For the season Gray has a 3.36 ERA, 2.95 FIP, 9.70 K/9, and 1.63 BB/9. With his dominating and efficient appearance last night Gray looks poised to continue his elite ways.
George Springer- OF- TOR- Hot- Springer was a significant part of Toronto's offensive explosion last night. He went 3-for-5 with 2 runs, 2 RBI, and a steal. It was Springer's 3rd straight multi-hit game and 4th in his last 6 games. He is working on a 6-game hitting streak. Springer's BABIP has surged in these 6 games, going from .280 to .309. Before last night's game his xBA was 15 points higher than his AVG. Springer has a solid EV of 90.2, which would be a career high if he ends there. His HardHit% is 44.4%, also better than he has ever finished with. Over his career, Springer has seen a slight increase in second half production. He is currently slashing .267/.362/.470 with 11 homers. He is on track to produce his best numbers in several seasons.
