Chase Burns- P- CIN- Hot- Burns threw arguably his best game of the season. He went 7 scoreless IP, allowing 4 hits, walking none, and striking out 8. Burns threw 93 pitches, 62 of them strikes. It was a significant turnaround from his last start, when he surrendered 5 runs on 6 hits and 3 walks in 5.1 IP. Burns still missed bats then, collecting 6 strikeouts. The 23-year-old has emerged as one of the class of young strong power pitchers. He has a 2.47 ERA, 3.14 FIP, 10.37 K/9, and 3.16 BB/9. Burns has allowed more than 2 ERs in just 4 of his 23 starts. He has been consistently excellent.
Xavier Edwards- SS- MIA- Cold- Regression has hit Edwards hard this month. At the end of July he was slashing .291/.372/.400 but has a .263 xBA and .371 xSLG. In August he has gone 8-for-42 and is now slashing .282/.361/.385. Edwards has outstanding plate discipline with a BB% of 11.5% and K% of 13.4%. But with an 87.0 EV and 29.2% he doesn't hit the ball with much authority. There is still room for negative regression.
Miguel Vargas- 3B- CHW- Hot- Vargas slugged 2 homers last night, giving him 27 for the season. He has 5 in his last 12 games. Vargas is slashing .239/.343/.486. He has severely underperformed in average, with a .261 xBA before last night. Surprisingly Vargas is also underperforming in SG, with a .512 xSLG. If you look at his Baseball Savant page you will see his lowest batting percentile at 66% in Squared Up%. Vargas has a potent bat. Regression will be his friend for the rest of 2026.
Kodai Senga- P- NYM- Rise Value- Senga earned his second save in his last two appearances last night, tossing a scoreless 9th inning. He is now at the top of the depth chart for Mets' closer. Senga had control issues at times but has toned it down somewhat in his most recent relief outings. Even with a team record like the Mets, a main closer has value.
Edwin Diaz- RP- Caution- Diaz earned a save, but it wasn't easy. His control is still an issue as he threw just 11 of 26 pitches for strikes and walked two batters. Diaz also hit a batter and got 1 strike out. He left the bases loaded. Two of the outs were on sharply hit ground balls. The Dodgers are going to keep running Diaz out there to get him (they hope) in shape by the time the postseason rolls around. It could be painful for his fantasy owners.
