Jasson Dominguez- OF- NYY- Rookie- Dominguez lived up to the hype of his MLB arrival. In his first MLB PA he homered off Justin Verlander. He didn't get any other hits, but that first one was notable. Dominguez will likely be occupying CF for the Yankees for most of the remainder of the season. He has a combination of power and speed, with 15 homers and 40 steals in a total of 118 minor league games across AA and AAA this season. Dominguez is only 20 years old so may have a tough time adjusting to the majors. Only 9 of his minor league games were at AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. In keeper leagues Dominguez is a higher valued prospect. How he handles his time with the Yankees over the next few weeks could impact his projections for 2024.
Xavier Edwards- SS- MIA- Rookie- Edwards scored in the 10th inning last night after reaching via fielder's choice while pinch hitting. He was called up from AAA Jacksonville where he was slashing .351/.429/.457. In 23 PAs with the Marlins the rookie is slashing .364/.364/.409. Edwards hasn't drawn a walk at the MLB level yet and is enjoying a .444 BABIP in his small sample size. He has stolen 32 bases for Jacksonville and had a BB% of 12.0% and K% of only 6.9%, so he has some plate discipline. Edwards projects as a utility player because of his versatility and also will contribute stolen bases when inserted as a pinch runner.
Nick Loftin- 3B- Royals- Rookie- Nick Loftin had a successful MLB debut, going 2-for-3 with a walk, double, run scored, and RBI. Loftin was slashing .270/.344/.444 with 14 homers and 6 steals at AAA Omaha when he was called up. Plate discipline was an issue for him in his first taste of AAA in 2022. He made a marked improvement this season, with his BB% rising from 6.0% to 9.5% and his K% dropping from 24.4% to 13.1%. Loftin can play OF and multiple IF positions so projects as a super utility player who can be plugged in and has a bat to make him worth inserting.
Emmett Sheehan- P- LAD- Rookie- Sheehan has gone for AA Tulsa to the Dodgers, then to AAA Oklahoma City for 3 games and is now back with the Dodgers and will start today. He has posted a 1.86 ERA at Tulsa, 5.59 at Oklahoma City, and 5.63 with LA in 38.1 IP. Between AA and AAA Sheehan struck out 102 batters in 63 IP. With the Dodgers he struck out 30. Long term Sheehan projects as a potential closer because of a dominating fastball. Until he gets to that role, he will likely struggle as a starter.
Sean Bouchard- 1B- COL- Rookie- Bouchard was a late season call up last year and slashed .297/.454/.500 with 3 homers in 97 PAs. Then he ruptured a biceps in Spring Training that required surgery. He was called up yesterday after only playing in 22 minor league games across 3 levels this year. In a small sample size at AAA Albuquerque he walked 17 times and only struck out 14 in 71 PAs. If his biceps continues to heal the combination of excellent plate discipline and power potential will make Bouchard a candidate for a roster spot with Colorado in 2024.
