Fleet Feet & Hot Hitters
Jose Siri, OF TAM
Siri steals the show in the opening pair of games vs the Jays with 3 SBs. Siri is a 30/30 capable player, with 30 MPH top sprint speed to boot. His 13% Barrel rate points to more power to come. Tampa's injury situation means no Josh Lowe for a bit and super sub Walls is also unavailable, clearing a path for Siri to play most everyday. Siri's steals should continue with health and his raw power (25 HR in only 364 PAs in 2023) should play up as he gets more consistent ABs. Jose can you see a 30/30 2024? As I said previously, I like the stock.
Nick Martini, OF CIN
The thirty-three year old lefty mashed six dingers in less than 80 PAs in 2023, but didn't appear to have a clear path to playing time in Cincy until just about everybody went down (Friedl, McLain, Eric Davis, Glenn Braggs...you get the point). Thrust into the starting role on Opening Day and Martini launched two bombs, rewarding NL-Only geniuses (I benched him in favor of Matt Chapman...why???) with great production. Martini's power is as real as the drink, though his age and playing time volatility limit his upside. Ride the wave for now and keep an eye on the Red's returning players. With a reasonable whiff rate of 18% and 46% sweet spot rate in limited time last year, Martini is worth a taste but you should feel shaken, not stirred to pick him up in Mixed Leagues. Add an olive and sip him up in NL only for OF depth.
Jake Burger, 3B MIA
Burger has been well done so far, in fact he's flame-broiled: 5 hits in 7 ABs with a run scored and 4 RBI will pass for a value meal. Burger's power is well-known, as indicated by his 17% Barrel rate and 50% hard hit rate from a full season of swatting in 2023. His playing time is secure and he has even flashed the leather a bit at 3B, which means he's a set it and forget it 3B moving forward. Monitor his heat in case you've got a 3B logjam as he could be a fine sell-high candidate for anyone desperate for hot corners.
RP Save Battles
Jason Foley, RP DET
Foley foiled the White Sox on Thursday, obliterating Moncada and Luis Robert Jr in order, both via the strikeout route. Foley threw absolute gas, hitting 100 plus on the radar multiple times, completely overmatching the batsmen. Foley looks like a closer, throws like a closer and gets results like a closer (57% Groundball rate and 4% hard hit rate). Look for Foley to close the door in Detroit on a semi-regular basis if he continues to make mincemeat of men. Alex Lange is listed as the co-closer, so monitor his performance when he is tabbed to enter games by AJ "Trashcan" Hinch.
Abner Uribe, RP MIL
Opening day and Uribe gets the call as closer vs the Mets. It had nothing to do with matchups as the Mets sent lefties aplenty in the 9th. Payamps took the 8th, as he did in 2023 and Megill looked erratic in the 7th. Payamps is still a steady RP who induces weak contact and limits baserunners but Uribe brings the heat and closes the door for game one. Uribe's 33% whiff rate combines well with a 54% groundball rate, making him an excellent ratio RP regardless of his closer status. However, for the moment, Uribe appears the Brewer top option for early saves.
