Nathan Eovaldi- P- TEX- Hot- Eovaldi turned in that rare achievement, the complete game shutout, against the Yankees yesterday. He allowed 3 hits, walked none, and struck out 8. Eovaldi was still hitting 98 mph in the 8th inning. He threw 78 of 113 pitches for strikes. The number of pitches was high but he did not struggle in any inning. Eovaldi's ERA dropped from 5.20 to 3.97. He had a bad start in April 12 where he gave up 6 runs to KC in 5 IP, which skews that result. His FIP is only 2.07. Eovaldi has now thrown 3 straight quality starts. If he shows no negative effect of the pitch count in his next start, Eovaldi could be poised to have excellent production for a lengthy stretch.
Easton McGee- RP- SEA- Rookie- McGee had a successful 2023 MLB debut. He threw 6.2 scoreless IP, allowing just 1 hit (which came in the 7th inning) and walking 1 while striking out 2 Blue Jays. McGee was known for his control in the minors and threw 45 of 64 pitches for strikes. He doesn't overpower batters and has never had a K/9 higher than 8.25. At AAA Tacoma this season it was 7.53, which was high for him but doesn't offer much hope for much fantasy help in the K column. For now McGee takes the rotation spot of Chris Flexen.
Kerry Carpenter- OF- DET- Player Injury- Carpenter was placed on the Il with a mild sprain of his shoulder. It will probably be a few weeks before he can return. He had gone 3-for-11 with a double and homer in his last 3 games. He leads the Tigers with 4 homers. Carpenter hit a total of 36 homers in 2022, across the AA, AAA, and MLB levels. His EV of 90.9 and HardHit% of 46.8% were solid. Carpenter's .256 BABIP was a big part of his .217 average. When he comes back, he could be a sleeper pick for good production.
David Bednar- RP- PIT- Hot- Bednar picked up his 9th save yesterday. He also has a 2-0 record. In 2022 Bednar picked up 19 saves with the Pirates, who only won 62 games all year. He has an ERA of 0.69 and has struck out 17 in 13 IP while walking only 1. Bednar has been solid since joining the Pirates in 2021. He has not posted an ERA above 2.61. Bednar is enjoying the benefits of pitching for a winning team. He has excelled in high-leverage situations over the past 3 seasons. The Pirates may not continue this stretch, but Bednar should be solid even if they come back down to earth.
Joey Meneses- OF- WAS- Stats- Meneses his 33 homers in 2022, 13 of them in 240 MLB PAs. So far in 2023 he has hit just 1 in 112 PAs with Washington. Meneses had a 91.4 EV and 47.1% HardHit%. Last year. This year they are 87.6 and 44.9%, respectively. However, Meneses maxEV is practically the same at 110.8 as opposed to 110.96 in 2022. A 44.9% HardHit% is not horrible. He has seen his GB% increase from 44.8% to 53.8%. This may be small sample size noise and Meneses could have a significant power surge as the season progresses.
