Kyle Schwarber- OF- PHI- Stats- Schwarber hit a grand slam yesterday in his 2-for-5 day. He also walked and scored a total of 3 runs besides the 4 RBI he picked up from the slam. It was Schwarber's 22nd homer of the season. That is a solid number but he only has 34 other hits this season. Schwarber has walked more times than he has hit safely, drawing 58 free passes. This has resulted in the odd slash line of .188/.328/.446 with an ISO of .258. Schwarber has a .200 BABIP so his average should benefit from regression to the mean. His EV of 92.0, maxEV of 113.4, Barrel% of 15.4%, and HardHit% of 47.3% show his power is still real. Schwarber may be a drain on the average column but regression should lessen that.
Nathan Eovaldi- P- TEX- Hot- Eovaldi held the arch-rival Astros scoreless for 7 IP yesterday, allowing 2 hits, walking 4, and striking out 5. He ran his record to 10-3. Eovaldi has a 2.64 ERA and 3.54 xFIP. His control has been slipping a bit of late. He threw 39 of 97 pitches for balls and has walked 13 batters in his last 5 starts, covering 32 IP. Even after that stretch his BB/9 is only 2.16 for the season. Eovaldi's K/9 has risen and fallen through the season and is now at 8.49. He has pitched effectively by inducing ground balls (GB% of 50.7 before yesterday) and keeping the ball in the park (0.64 K/9.) He has been solid with this formula in the past.
MacKenzie Gore- P- WAS- Cold- After allowing more than 3 runs twice in his first 12 starts he has done it 3 times in his last 5 starts. Yesterday was Gore's worst start of the season. He was tagged for 7 runs on 6 hits and 3 walks while striking out 3 in 2.2 IP. His ERA rose from 3.89 to 4.48. Gore's xFIP is at 3.74. He still has a solid K/9 of 10.90. Gore's 1.43 HR/9 is well above his 0.90 in 2022. He has been going through a rough patch of keeping the ball in the yard. Gore had allowed 5 of his 14 homers in the last 5 games and 9 of them in his last 8 starts. His strikeout rate has not faltered. If he gets his long ball issue under control and back to last year's pace he is poised for a strong second half.
Ezequiel Tovar- SS- COL- Hot- Tovar went 1-for-3 with a walk to extend his hitting streak to 14 games. He has hit safely in 19 of his last 20 games and failed to hit safely only 4 times in his last 37 games. Tovar also collected his 40th RBI of the season yesterday. He has definitely enjoyed Coors Field. Heading into last night's home game Tovar slashed .293/.325/.490 at Coors and .242/.279/.386 on the road. His value is elevated when he's at home.
Luis Severino- P- NYY- Cold- Severino has 2 quality starts in his 8 outings since a late start due to injury. Yesterday was not one of the quality starts. Severino was tagged for 9 runs (7 ER) on 9 hits and 3 walks while striking out 2 in 4 IP. His 58 strikes out of 87 pitches was not a bad ratio but the pitches were hit hard, including two homers. Severino now has a 6.30 ERA, 6.33 FIP, 5.27 xFIP, 7.65 K/9, 4.05 BB/9, and 2.25 HR/9. The drop in K/9 is probably tied to the drop of 1.5 mph in velocity from last year. Severino hasn't been able to recapture his form often enough to be worthwhile in fantasy.
