Drew Sommers, RP, Detroit Tigers
Sommers went 1.2 IP with 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB and 1 K. Why am I writing about some random non-closer middle reliever? Well...because he's pretty darn good. Sommers has a 2.02 xERA thanks to a ridiculous 38.5% K rate and 60% GB rate. Insane. Not to mention the 1.8% Barrel rate, 23.6% HH rate, and .167 xBA against. This is mini-lefty Mason Miller. I can hear the "small-sample size" cries already. Sommers has 27.2 IP on the season, and while that's smaller, it's not meaningless either. Ball in play data takes longer to stabilize, but K and BB figures take a lesser sample size to stabilize. Sommers is a whiff machine - no matter how you slice it. And if you're in a position where you're fighting for pitcher ratios, this is the guy.
Justin Foscue, 2B, Texas Rangers
Foscue went 2-4 with 2 R, 2B, HR, 2 RBI on three hard hit balls. He's slashing .256/.333/.512 this month. Foscue has only recently become a full time player, and it's likely due the quality of his bat making it tough for the Rangers to keep him out of the lineup. Foscue's 28% Pull Air rate and 41% HH rate are very appealing. He has 9 homers through 188 PA's. His 10% barrel rate, .393 xwOBACON, and 25/8 K/BB ratio don't scream super star, but they absolutely put him on the map at the 2B position. He is one of my favorite high floor guys right now at the position.
Tristan Peters, OF, Chicago White Sox
Peters went 3-3 with 2 R, 2B, HR, 3 RBI, 2 BB on one hard hit ball. The 26 year old rookie has been productive on the surface, but I greatly question his ability to reproduce in 2027. A .340 wOBACON, 32% HH rate, and 5.6% Barrel don't exactly inspire excitement. They are low for fantasy baseball purposes. Peters thrives on contact (18% K, 83% Z Contact), a respectable LASS (35%), and an absurd 27% Pull Air rate, which is fairly odd for someone who is so contact-first. Nonetheless, I'll take it. I actually think there is enough here for Peters to repeat in the HR and SB department. He may even get to 15/15 in 2027, but I don't believe he can maintain a .277 BA in 2027.
Luis Robert Jr., OF, New York Mets
Robert went 2-4 with R, HR, RBI, BB on three hard hit balls. Don't look now, but he's really hit his stride after spending a majority of the season on the IL and only returning in the middle of the summer. This month, Robert is slashing a robust .305/.358/.627 with 6 homers. Robert features premium bat speed, technically has elite running speed, and is only punching out at a respectable 24.5%. The natural baseball talent is through the roof, and all signs point towards him being able to hit homers. If he's around, pick him up and play him.
Hunter Goodman, C, Colorado Rockies
Goodman went 1-4 with a solo homer on one hard hit ball. This was his first game back after a short stint on the IL, so it's nice to see him come back strong. Goodman swatted 31 homers last season, but many were worried about his 26% K rate. Well, somehow the homeruns went up (this was his 35th) and the K rate has jumped to 33%. Goodman's zone contact is down to 76%, and his chase is up to 40%. He has somehow done all of this without increasing his swing rate, so the contact ability has genuinely gotten worse. Luckily for Goodman, the 30% Pull Air rate is almost double the big league average, and combine that with a 46% HH rate, you get 17% barrels in the most homerun friendly ballpark on the planet. His .231 xBA / .252 BA are impressive given the lack of contact, but factor in the quality of that contact and it makes sense. As long as he doesn't change ballparks, it's technically repeatable. I'd be looking to take advantage of other managers' fears about his contact in 2027 drafts.
