Braxton Ashcraft-Pirates-SP
Braxton Ashcraft was absolutely dominant today against the Marlins. He went 9 IP and gave up 1 ER on 3 H, 1 BB, and 10 K on 85 pitches. Ashcraft has posted a 3.88 ERA and 1.11 WHIP across 141.1 IP, with a strong 27% strikeout rate, 21% K-BB%, and 3.32 SIERA that suggest he's been much better than his ERA indicates. The last 30 days have been a different story, though, as he's managed just a 14.1% K-BB% with a 7.58 ERA and 3.80 SIERA, while his 2.37 HR/9 has done plenty of damage. Tonight's complete-game effort was exactly what he needed after that recent downturn and showed the swing-and-miss ability is still there.
Parker Messick-Guardians-SP
Parker Messick went 5.2 IP and gave up 2 ER on 3 H, 2 BB, and 6 K against the Tigers. Messick has been excellent over 142.1 IP, carrying a 2.59 ERA, 1.03 WHIP, 25% K rate, and 18% K-BB% with a 3.62 SIERA. He's been even better over the last 30 days, posting a 1.82 ERA, 0.89 WHIP, 27% K rate, and 25% K-BB%, while allowing just 0.58 HR/9. The combination of strikeouts, run prevention, and improved command makes Messick look like a legitimate fantasy starter rather than a short-term hot streak.
Keider Montero-Tigers-SP
Keider Montero went 6.1 scoreless innings, giving up 3 H and 1 BB without recording a strikeout against the Guardians. Montero has a 3.22 ERA and 0.99 WHIP across 128.1 IP, but the underlying profile is much less convincing, with an 18% K rate, 12% K-BB%, and 4.43 SIERA. The last 30 days have been fairly similar, with a 3.60 ERA, 20% K rate, and 14.3% K-BB%, so the run prevention has remained useful even without much swing-and-miss. Tonight's shutout effort helps the surface numbers, but the lack of strikeouts keeps him more matchup-dependent in fantasy despite the great ratios.
Max Fried-Yankees-SP
Max Fried went 5 IP and allowed 1 ER on 5 H with 2 BB and 4 K against the Mariners. Fried has been excellent overall, posting a 2.81 ERA and 1.00 WHIP through 86.1 IP, with a 24% K rate, 16% K-BB%, 10% SwStr%, and 3.80 SIERA. What's particularly encouraging is how much better he's been lately: over the last 30 days, Fried owns a 1.83 ERA and 0.86 WHIP while striking out 35% of hitters and producing a 26% K-BB% and 2.79 SIERA. The recent strikeout jump gives him an even stronger fantasy profile than the already excellent season line suggests.
Kevin Gausman-Cubs-SP
Kevin Gausman lasted just 4.2 IP and allowed 6 ER on 7 H with 1 BB and 7 K. Gausman's season has been underwhelming at 4.53 ERA and 1.27 WHIP through 139 IP, although his 23% K rate, 17% K-BB%, 12% SwStr%, and 3.86 SIERA still point to a pitcher with useful strikeout ability. The last 30 days have been particularly rough, with a 4.09 ERA, 10% K-BB%, and 4.62 SIERA, even as his 16% strikeout rate has fallen well below his season mark. The strikeouts remain encouraging, but Gausman hasn't been able to improve his ratios.
