Ronald Acuña Jr- OF- ATL- Hot- Acuña hit a homer on the first pitch he saw in his injury-delayed start to the 2025 season on Friday night. Last night he added another homer in his second game. Acuña hit 2 homers in 22 PAs in his brief rehab stint. It's an extremely small sample size but it looks like Acuña's power stroke is in place. He struck out 3 times yesterday but only once on Friday and twice during the rehab stint. The big question is whether his baserunning will be hampered and it's too soon to tell that. In 2022, his first comeback year from an ACL tear he stole 29 bases in 119 games so I wouldn't bet against him making a significant contribution the rest of this season.
Marcelo Mayer- SS- BOS- Rookie- The highly touted prospect made his MLB debut yesterday in the nightcap of yesterday's doubleheader against the Orioles. He went 0-for -4 with 3 strikeouts. Mayer looked overmatched in a key at bat in the 7th with the game scoreless, two outs, and runners at second and third. He struck out swinging at a pitch that was low. Hey, it was his first major league game. Don't read to much into it. Mayer was slashing .271/.347/.471 with 9 homers, 31 runs scored, and 43 RBI at AAA Worcester when he was called up. He has plenty of power. With Alex Bregman on the IL Mayer will get a good chance to get more comfortable. Between him and Roman Anthony's impending arrival, the Red Sox are going to have two elite talents joining their team. They should both be claimed quickly when available.
Jack Leiter- P- TEX- Hot- As has become all too familiar for the Rangers, a solid effort by their starting pitcher was squandered by the bullpen. Well, maybe Leiter's outing yesterday wasn't as solid as could be hoped for, but he allowed 2 runs on 6 hits and 5 walks while striking out 3 in 5 IP. He did leave with a lead but then the bullpen coughed up 6 runs in the 6th inning. As can be seen from the walk total, Leiter had some control issues. He only threw 52 of his 94 pitches for strikes. However, unlike his MLB debut season in 2024, Leiter didn't allow his baserunners to score. His ERA is at 4.17, but that is impacted by two horrible starts where he was charged with 10 ERs in 9.2 IP. Leiter has made great strides this season and is reflecting the potential that the Rangers have been looking for. What's left is to be more consistent.
Brooks Lee- SS- MIN- Rookie- Lee went 3-for-5 last night with an RBI. He is now slashing .244/.292/.370 with 4 homers. Regression will be kind to Lee. His BABIP raised 17 points yesterday but is still at .267. Lee's plate discipline is solid, with a 6.6% BB% and 16.8%. His average and OBP should get a boost.
David Peterson- P- NYM- Hot- Peterson pitched his longest start of the season, allowing 2 runs in 7.2 IP on 5 hits and 2 walks while striking out 7. Peterson has been consistently solid this season. Last night was his 4th consecutive quality start. Peterson has not given up more than 3 runs in an outing and only did that once. He has an ERA of 2.79with a 3.40 FIP and 3.45 xFIP. Peterson has control issues at times, evidenced by his 3.41 BB/9. His 8.38 K/9 shows him giving moderate value there. Peterson has been a consistent asset, particularly now that he is pitching deeper into games.
