First Pitch - September 26, 2007 - 2007 FPI All Stars and Anti-All Stars

Jeff Ackerman

2007 FPI All Stars and Anti-All Stars

Good morning everybody.  With the MLB season drawing to a close, today we will take a look at our own versions of All Star teams.  As our measure we will use our proprietary indicator, FPI (click here for a reference article on FPI).  Basically, these are the guys that have had the best fantasy seasons in 2007 (according to FPI).  If you have enough of these guys on your team, hopefully you were in contention this year.  If not, take note of the names here for your drafts next year, especially if there are some you might not have expected.

The method here is simple.  I established minimums for at-bats (400) for batters, innings pitched (150) for starting pitchers, and innings pitched (50) for relievers.  An asterisk (*) indicates that the player was also a member of our Mid-Season FPI All Star teams (back in July).  The All Stars are the qualifying players with the best FPI at their positions.  The Anti-All Stars are the qualifying players with the worst FPI at their positions.  Honorable Mention status means that they had an FPI of 0.75 or greater for batters, FPI of 1.80 or greater for starters, and FPI of 2.50 or greater for relievers.

Would anyone have thought that a shortstop would have the highest FPI of any offensive player in the NL this season?  Nobody, that's who.  Dontrelle Willis making the Anti-All Star team in the NL is one of the bigger surprises of the year (note: it does not surprise me AT ALL to see Adam Eaton on that same list).  Perennial All Star Andruw Jones also makes this stinkers list, and in a contract year no less.  Wasn't Bill Hall being bandied about as an MVP candidate when the season started?

AL Honorable Mention:  2B Brian Roberts (0.76), 3B Chone Figgins (0.86), OF Carl Crawford (0.79), OF Vladimir Guerrero (0.78), DH Jim Thome (0.76), SP Johan Santana (1.93), SP Kelvim Escobar (1.92), SP Justin Verlander (1.89), Chien-Ming Wang (1.88), SP C.C. The ageless Jorge Posada produced in a big way this year, probably outproducing what 99.9% of his owners thought they'd get from him at this stage of his career.  Arod led the pack by a wide margin, obviously.  Josh Barfield went from up-and-coming rookie stud in the making to total dud in one year.  Vernon Wells was the Andruw Jones of the AL this year (and both on my team, wouldn't ya know).  Brian Stokes' FPI is NOT a misprint.  Take it in.  Note some of the new names of starters in the AL (like Bedard, Burnett, Mcgowan, Carmona) that edged out some serious veteran studs (like Santana and Sabathia).
